Stainless Steel Chemical Tote Tanks Require Periodic Testing

Metal totes manufactured to DOT/UN standards are a popular option across bulk transportation markets.

Chemical Tote Tank

To maintain DOT/UN compliance, the chemical tote tank owner should be sure to follow a regular inspection program that carefully documents all testing procedures and the associated results.

Tote tank owners should consider the following as part of developing a full inspection program for their stainless steel tote tanks and other IBCs:

The 'leak proof' test should be performed every 30 months on any DOT/UN approved IBC containing liquids for transport.

  1. An extensive external inspection should occur every 30 months after manufacture or repair on all stainless steel totes, as well as on metal, rigid plastic and composite IBCs.
  2. Internal inspections should be performed every five years for any defect that might make the tote tank unsafe for transportation. A thickness test is also required for metal IBCs every five years.
  3. Be sure to record every test and keep the documentation at least until the next successful inspection. Also, make sure to log the retest date on the IBC's DOT/UN tag.
  4. Tote tank owners should always refer to the United States Department of Transportation standards to ensure that their stainless steel tanks and IBC totes meet all appropriate federal regulations. Regulations may vary for your specific totes. Be sure to contact the Department of Transportation for exact information pertaining to your intermediate bulk containers.

U.S. DOTRegular inspection and maintenance of your stainless steel totes, along with proper handling and care, will ensure that your IBC investment is well protected for the long term.
