IBCs and the DOT

chemical storage containerThe DOT have specific requirements when it comes to transporting regulated liquid products, especially when it comes to chemicals. There are also certain qualities you should look for in an IBC tote tank in order to move your liquids safely; this great article in PCI Magazine help us better understand some of the best practices direct from the DOT.

Chemicals can fall within several classification; this category can encompass paints, solvents, coatings and other liquids included in packaging groups II and III. Transportation can be moving them across your plant or across the country via trucker. Below are a few general guidelines regarding shipping regulated goods in tote tanks. Please note the information is provided for general review only; full details are available via the DOT website.

For optimal transportation of liquid products, IBCs should be:

  • Well Maintained
Free of visible corrosion, contamination and cracking which could impact the integrity of the container
  • Inspected Regularly
A leak proof test should be performed every 30 months, with internal inspections and thickness tests  performed on metal chemical IBC tanks every 5 years. See the IBC testing guidelines.
  • Clearly Marked
Manufacturer name and inspection date must be tagged and clearly visible on the container.

Ultimately, exact regulations can vary based on the type of IBC, but the above are a good starting point to help you achieve safe transport. Have specific questions? Connect with the IBC experts at Metano – we’re happy to help!
